Safe for Play?

Bird's Eye View: The Telstra Dome's Surface has seen better days.

Being in Melbourne over the New Year had given me the opportunity to attend some sporting events. On this particular occaision I was lucky enough to attend the A-League game between the Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United. In What was somewhat of a dull game, the football was pushed aside as a great deal of scrutiny was placed upon the pitch which was considered unfit for play. This was thanks to the "Senstation" music festival which had taken place on New Years Eve, in which 40 000 people had crammed onto the Telstra Dome's Surface, essentially damaging the pitch. Although carpet had been laid over the grass to protect it, it came under a great deal of heat from match officials and Melbourne Coach Ernie Merrick, who labelled the pitch "abysmal", as shards of glass had to be removed just hours before play had started.
